By the time Billie Holiday came along, jazz had advanced a great deal, with many, many outstanding musicians in NYC, Chicago, Kansas City, and many other cities. So it isn't hard to understand that a singer of her quality would attract fine musicians, or that she would seek out the best musicians to play behind and with her singing.
