Doug is of course right about music and dance. Actually, music is not even
needed for dance -- drums will do, or even group handclapping. The potential
of music could never be realized until it had been freed from dance. The
idea that music is best when tied to dance is a bit of vulgar historicism --
the idea that the meaning of an entity is its source. It's just the
opposite. Music gives us a key to the dance, but the dance cannot give us
any key to music. (See my favorite quotation from the Grudrisse.)
