Alan: "But, um, W... weren't you the guy defending the Dems"

[WS:] Autres temps, autres moeurs. I've become much more disillusioned with the Dems lately, or the Obama administration to be more precise. The Dems are not that bad at the state level, though, at least in MD.

Alan:. "How is the logic of capital any different than the logic of role internalization - beyond the fact that they operate at different levels of abstraction (and, in fact, both leave room for constrained agency when properly understood)?

[WS:] The main difference is that the term "logic of capital" smacks of social determinism, which I philosophically oppose, whereas the latter takes a contingent view, which I favor. To me, it makes a big difference between saying "everything is pre-determined, but there is considerable leeway in details" and "everything is contingent on the situation, but you can provisionally induce some more general patterns." It is the half-empty, half-full argument, even though the amount of wine in the bottle is the same. It is a matter or philosophical/aesthetic preference, if you will.
