[WS:] I think it really depends. Sometimes it does sometimes it does not. It think what makes a difference which depends to what degree the crisis affects the core beliefs and value systems that legitimate the status quo. If the crisis puts into question these legitimating systems but does not shatter them - it will likely result in reactionary attitudes, basically a defensive reaction toward the status quo. But if the crisis shatters these legitimating systems - radicalization is more likely, as there is nothing left to defend and people are more open to new radical ideas.
