Doug is of course right about music and dance. Actually, music is not even needed for dance -- drums will do, or even group handclapping.
^^^^^ CB: Yes, but the other instrument's parts have rhythms to dance to , too. So, the more the merrier the dance.

The potential of music could never be realized until it had been freed from dance. The idea that music is best when tied to dance is a bit of vulgar historicism -- the idea that the meaning of an entity is its source. It's just the opposite. Music gives us a key to the dance, but the dance cannot give us any key to music. (See my favorite quotation from the Grudrisse.)
^^^^^^^ CB: Do you dance much ? It's probably difficult to apprehend the key in music connected to dance if you don't dance.
Maybe vulgar historicism is more vital and connected to the beauties and joys of life than fancy historicism.
