MMM sounds fairly tame now, but when it was released it was considered unlistenable noise, at least to rock fans who generally weren't accustomed to that kind thing. If someone had a grown up on steady diet of Peter Brotzmanm or Derek Bailey it was nothing new; but fans of the The Velvets had to be confused. Reed seemed hell-bent on fucking with Velvets fans' expectations for a spell: "'Rock and Roll Animal" set their teeth on edge, and MMM really pulled the rug out.
