Charles Brown: Lawrence Brown, my cousin, is playing trombone in the picture.

I'll sing "Satin Doll" at Bert's* tonight; and do little half dances and rhythmic poses to it during the band's solos. Switcheroony !

We had 5,000 comrades partying in the new way at Bert's Market Place during the US Social Forum. It was the socialist market.

" This place is off-the-chain cool. It's funky, and a little scary (if you're not used to running around Detroit), but also very cool. If you were raised around Detroit, and are not afraid to go into the city and mix and mingle then you'll recognize a classic when you come here."

This place is off-the-chain cool. It's funky, and a little scary (if you're not used to running around Detroit), but also very cool. If you were raised around Detroit, and are not afraid to go into the city and mix and mingle then you'll recognize a classic when you come here.

I had never been here before and my Mom and her friend, knowing that my g/f and I like to sing, met us down there on an early Saturday afternoon. The joint was packed and buzzing at 1pm! (Get there early if you want a table for karaoke). It had the loose, cool feel of a jazz club on a Friday night, but here it was just after lunch on Saturday. I could tell this was going to be a semi-serious performance I'd have to deliver because there were some really great singers and performers! Wow, they were giving it their all and really entertaining! When I sang I mentioned I was in from out of town, and people were so cool and kind and just happy to have you there. You really get a feel for the city of Detroit at Bert's: black and white, older and younger, guys and gals, everyone just having a great time and letting go. "Can't we all just get along?" Well, at Bert's I'd have to say, yes, we can.

I can't attest to the food, though it looked and smelled like authentic soul food, which I really like, but we had eaten beforehand and had to take a rain check. We just had drinks, which were reasonably priced, and our server was attentive even though she had a lot of people to wait on.

I was back in Michigan for three weeks and visited a lot of great places. Bert's was the one that gave me that feeling I had as a kid of being in the city after a Tigers game with my Dad (at the Lindell AC, anyone remember that place?!), and just catching all of the sights and sounds the city of Detroit has to offer. And, of course, the stars of the show: the people. Thanks for a great time, Bert's.

tasty but not good bbq, excellent lemonade, tons o karaoke fun on a Saturday afternoon.

The best smelling BBQ in detroit (or at least Eastern Market). They make a great sauce, which is tasty as hell, and adequately covers over the ribs which are not really that great on their own. They tend to be really dry and tough. Good smoke flavor though. They make an excellent lemonade, second only to Kim's Produce on Woodward. The prices are also jacked up for the portions you get (and quality), making the tasty but sub-par ribs hurt a bit going down. The best value on the menu might be the half-chicken dinner at $8.

The best part about Bert's during Eastern Market hours is the outdoor karaoke. The host of the program introduced a singer who was visiting Detroit with his family all the way from Taiwan. The host gave them a pretty warm welcome, and then mentioned how much she loves Thai food and would they come over to her house later... whoops! XD The singer did nail some BeeGees however. The outdoor karaoke patio is as entertaining as it gets.

Don't know anything about the reputed jazz and good times that go down after hours, which sounds like a blast. I do know that during the day, your best bet is to just grab a lemonade and listen to the amateur hour for free. Though I'll probably go back to try their gigantic polish sausage on a bun, I'd actually say skip the bbq for other goodies being sold in and around Eastern Market.
