Yes, but in Eastern Europe not everyone was stupid enough to believe that they could ultimately become wealthy. (Of course, pre-1989 Poland DID have a few millionaires!) Mike G

Surely you must remember that your "Actually Existing Socialist" headfixers were green with envy of Madison Avenue--whose techniques of mass manipulation were infantile compared to those of today's media empires.

How very, very true. There is no comparison in the sophistication of Madison Avenue vs eastern european propaganda. When I came to the U.S. and was told that there was brainwashing under communism, but under capitalism everyone was free to think for themselves, it was all I could do not to laugh out loud.
