Well, there are two issues here. The accuracy of the theories presented by Diamond (and other, perhaps more informed deterministic materialists) and their political implications. The problem is when these two issues are conflated. You end up with the risk of falling sway to cognitive errors resulting from politically inspired wishful thinking. Just because something isn't politically useful doesn't mean it's not true. Not only that, but the politically palatable should be accorded the same vigorous inquiry as the unpalatable.
