I think I'd qualify that a bit. Whatever elite there is, it's a local one. Students from around the nation attend a Choate or a Deerfield, but you don't find them applying to Punahou.
Also, things may have changed since I was there in the 1960s, but at that time there were only two private schools: Hanahau'oli (which only went up to the 6th grade) and Punahou. Otherwise, it was public school.
