One correction (it may seem pedantic, but it actually goes to the heart of Szasz' argument):

When I wrote:

"...those experiences of misery, maladjustment or disorientation that are commonly identified as 'mental illness.'"

I should have written:

"...those experiences of misery, maladjustment or disorientation that are commonly identified as *symptoms* of 'mental illness.'"
