Germans call for immediate end to nuclear energy
About 160,000 people have demonstrated across Germany, and demanded the immediate shutdown of all 17 nuclear power plants in the country.
Anti-nuclear movements are gaining momentum in Germany in the wake of the recent nuclear accident in Japan.
On Saturday, people took to the streets in 21 major cities including Berlin, Hamburg and Munich.
In Hamburg, 20,000 demonstrators chanted slogans and waved yellow flags to show their opposition to nuclear energy.
A young man said that he hopes for an early shift to renewable energy and the scrapping of all nuclear power plants.
Chancellor Angela Merkel has announced that Germany will move away from nuclear energy and her cabinet is expected to make a formal decision on June 6th.
The government's plan includes the decommissioning of all nuclear plants within 10 years, and the promotion of renewable energy sources such as wind power.
