Back in 02-06, during the peak GWB years, I worked/lived in Eastern Tennessee. During the latter segment of those years, I made frequent road trips to Athens, GA, right through the spine of southern Appalachia. Arguably the most evangelical populist right-wing region in the US. Fox TV was always on in every public establishment -- bar, restaurant, roadhouse, Waffle House, you name it -- but IN THE BACKGROUND. Mostly WHITE NOISE.

And didn't a story more or less like this run in the Atlantic Monthly (I think) back in '05 or '06? Yesterday's snooze...
