I'd say it's grossly unfair to police agents. When they sling false accusations, I'm sure they're careful to base them on something, as opposed to absolutely nothing.
In any event, I don't know how much time they actually spend stirring up animosity these days, as opposed to simply collecting information (and doing the work necessary for it). I struck up a friendship with one from the NYPD's Demographics Unit for the better part of a year, until his status was revealed this summer. He was a very nice guy, without a bad word for anyone - a peacemaker within our group - if a little flaky and unreliable at times.
