The first "hippies" who moved into Haight-Ashbury were mature adults. The
wife of J.P. Cannon (of the SWP), noting the people moving into that area,
predicted the coming of a women's movement. (I got this from the former SWP
member who had the conversation with her.)  Then the press pulled a stunt
analogous to what they did to the Panthrs: they 'recruited' for them by a
false description, and drop-out teenagers began to flood in. The "hippie"
movement, in other words, was NOT, to begin with, a youth movement.
