The PP, inevitable winner by default, got 45 percent of the votes. A majority, thus voted against them. Moreover, the turnout was at least three percent less than in the previous election, and there is no report as yet of blank and defaced ballots. The new government will be no better and no worse than the outgoing one. Nevertheless, the result is a positive one since the PSOE in defeat and opposition will have lost much of its ability to stifle mass action against the EU/ Vierte Reich austerity diktats.
