A poorly-chosen target of fun, Carrol. His aphorism is as questionable as aphorisms usually are, but he was a mighty deep thinker. At best, it's a little like making fun of Isaac Newton for his speculations about apocalyptics and alchemy.
Guy is actually very much worth reading. Maybe even more than Newton, at this particular conjuncture.
