Doug: "What's wrong with wearing beautiful clothes?"

[WS:] Nothing. In fact they should be available to everyone, not just rich snobs and wannabies who can afford them. It does not take much more resources to produce beautiful stuff than it takes to produce crap. The main reason why beautiful things are scarce and crap is plentiful is the appeal to snobbery of the former - it is the scarce and expensive that makes them appealing to upper classes (or wannabies.)

It is the Lenin's golden toilet thing, if you will. What really matters is not the practicality (or lack thereof) of making toilets out of precious metal, but the status mystique of the precious metals themselves. Destroy status and the mystique of status symbols will go down the toilet, which metaphorically speaking is like making toilets out of gold. Or making everyday products for the masses truly beautiful.
