[lbo-talk] My Recent Encounters with Chinese Capitalism

My experience was not particularly Chinese & maybe not particularly characteristic of capitalism. The line is that the country represents socialism with Chinese characteristics. And, yes, greed and corruption were not unknown in China beforehand. Emperors would come to power by killing their relatives.

My experience is that over 5 years, the hotel, which has a picture of Zhou En Lai in the lobby has changed as management has passed in to private hands.

Also, corruption has taken on a brazenness that seems new, like the young man who killed someone with his car and protested his arrest by shouting "I am the son of [I forget the name]." Also, there is no pretense at all of good intentions, such as when a company sells plastic made to look like rice or contaminates milk.
