this entire time, I've been vaguely reminded of Tom Wolfe's Bonfire of the Vanities - what I seem to recall is the portrait he paints of an elite terrified of the rabble, terrified that they were going to come after them with pitchforks and take all their stuff, make them suffer - much as whites were said to be terrified of slave insurrections.
