This just in from the University of Illinois: Dear Faculty, Staff, and Students,  I'm pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Larry Schook as Vice President for Research, pending approval of the Board of Trustees at its September 9, 2011, meeting.  Dr. Schook has been serving in this role on an interim basis since March 2011.  An internal search was conducted and pending Board approval, effective September 16, 2011, Dr. Schook will assume the appointment on a permanent basis.  I'm grateful to members of the search committee, led by Dr. Skip Garcia, Vice President for Health Affairs, for their thorough and careful work on this important search.  I'm delighted that Dr. Schook will assume this appointment. His record of research is exemplary, with over 200 publications and over $25 million in externally sponsored research.  Over the past six months as the interim vice president for research, Dr. Schook has helped develop bold new initiatives to facilitate our research enterprise, foster cross-campus collaborations, develop plans to improve research administration, and forge strong new partnerships with the public and private sector.   I hope you will join me in congratulating Dr. Schook on his permanent appointment as Vice President for Research.  I know that, like me, you will look forward to his leadership as we work together to advance our already outstanding research enterprise, technology transfer programs, and economic development initiatives across our campuses. Sincerely, Mike Michael J. Hogan President, University of Illinois
