Eric: "This is why I think it is essential that a Republican win the presidency next year. The Democrats, unless they want to fall off the face of the earth, have no choice but to be somewhat vibrant opposition."

[WS:] This is unlikely to happen, because Dems are owned and operated by business and Wall Street, just as their Repug counterparts are. They will not form a vibrant opposition, whether in office or not.

Until very recently, my main reason for voting Dem was aesthetic, I am revolted by the gutter populist, jingoistic, anti-government drivel oozed by the Repugs. I though that electing Dems would reduce the volume of that drivel, even if pro-business and pro-Wall street policies continue. Obama appeared to speak more politely than Repug hacks. However, this does not seem to be the case anymore.

I also think that Dems losing the election would be a bad thing, because it would help to perpetuate the illusion that the electoral system produces any policy change. Liberals will focus their energies on electing another "savior" and forget that the system itself sucks and needs to be overhauled. When Dems stay in power, however, it will finally become clear that it does not matter who gets elected - not only the outcomes but even the rhetoric will not change. Therefore, the illusion that the US electoral system "works" for anyone but the ruling class may finally be put to a well deserved rest.
