huh. actually, i was underestimating - probably an outdated formula for tech writers back in the late 90s. Today, Monster.com advises that you use this rule of thumb: If you want to make the equivalent of, say, $50k/year, as a freelancer you need to clear $50/hr

When technical writers in NYC make $120k writing software manuals, then I'd say economic journalists like Doug ought to be making somewhere around the same amount of money. That's a wage slave check of $60/hr. For a freelancer it would be $120/hr according to the article above.
