There is no better pair of examples than the US' reaction to Marx and Keynes; today only a tiny, tiny fraction of US citizens know of de Tocqueville or Blackstone or Heidegger.
Even Einstein no longer seems to be a household name in the US. Hell, how many know of the folks who invented Oxycodone?
