in re: the backstabbing corporate world - still hoping to hear woj's and michael's thoughts on academia - all i gotta say is: holee fuckin shit.

i have been privy to this world of late and i just keep thinking: damn, i need to start writing a journal and write on this someday.

it takes an utterly insane person to climb the ranks of managment. i'm sitting here watching how it happens that no one ever challenges the higher ups, how it happens that they keep making the same damn stupid decisions over and over in spite of what should have been obvious learning experiences.

quick version: these people count on the next crisis to hit shift-f5. they're like gamblers, certain that they can keep pushing and pushing. only in this case, the fact that they were running a dog of a hand is never revealed because they count on something to upturn the poker table or someone else to fold or someone to cheat too obviously so the fingers point elsewhere instead of at the real fuck up in the game.

and the only person who can live like that has to be certifiably insane. never mind spending all day discussing the ins and outs of shit you haven't klew one about. Yes, that project is 95% done. Shipping in three weeks. Yep.

And then they walk out of the room knowing they don't have to hit the deadline b/c they count on something else coming up which they can blame for missing deadline. it's fucking amazing, this shell game.

anyway, i just witnessed some truly impressive backstabbing at a board meeting. these guys give new meaning to that whole alpha male analysis of corporate life.
