A sensitive read of Andrew Bacevic would (probably against his will)
place him on the left. In my discipline (okay my Masters and PHD were in International Political Economy, but I can claim International Relations), he presents himself as Conservative, but his work is profound for its intellectual honesty.
He most pithily observed that the whole idea that the US saved Europe during the second world war was rubbish since the Soviet Union had already done the dirty work.
To be sure, a true-blue-blooded conservative would rarely, if ever:
a) deny that the US was the great saviour of Europe b) give the former Soviet Union any credit
