If you don't like gmail's web interface, you can use pop; I'm using
Thunderbird and accessing pop.gmail.com on port 995.

There is a real problem with multiple sources of information out there. 
Gmail might support (and prefer) IMAP, but that doesn't mean that Outlook 
could handle it,

Outlook is only set up for one-way communication. IMAP requires two way.

In the unix world there are several different protocols that include POP, 
POP2, POP3, IMAP, EREN and others I forgot.
