I think the threat of overthrow/assassination is quite credible in
this situation for two reasons:
1. they had the means - these folks were professional killers (ex-Army)
2. they had a motive - paranoid hatred of Obamasocialism
3. and most importantly - they decided to kill two people to keep
their plans secret, which means that they were quite serious about
them.

As to the corporate protectors trope - if one has a nuanced view of
the world in which there is wide array of shades of grey, then
corporate protection via Democrat party does not appear as the worst
thing that can possibly happen - in fact it looks quite benign
comparing to other alternatives.  Of course, if one holds a
black-or-white view in which a single drop of grey is all that it
takes to make things black - that is a different story, but I do not
subscribe to such a point of view.
