Ravi: "Liberals and leftists tend to be more asshole’ish on the net. But much better in person."

[WS:] I tried to factor the net behavior out. It is a different kind of behavior than face to face interaction. Similar to shooting bad characters in a video game - you interact with computer images not real people. I do not think that many gamers would actually shoot a real person.

I was talking mostly about face to face interactions. The conservatives I am talking about would say some pretty nasty opinions of politicians or "liberal elites" but at the same time were very polite and respectful to me as a person, even knowing that I am a member of the "liberal elite." On the other hand, lefties were pretty nasty in my face - condescending, vitriolic, judgmental, intolerant, even though we pretty much agreed on ideology.

But again - I also met nice liberals and lefties and asshole conservatives. My favorite anecdote iss meeting a few Thatcherite economists in Poland couple of years ago - a particularly nasty and arrogant bunch. However, I was introduced to them as a "JHU faculty" so they tried to behave even though I sensed that they would gladly punch me in the face. It was fun teasing them.

But much better in person. I think the context (of live encounters) tones down their MENSAssholishness. Conservatives on the other hand vary… one type, the kind old church lady prone to saying sweet racist shit fits your stereotype. Then there is the old Irish guy I met at a barbecue recently, who took off at the first excuse on that “socialist faggot”(*) Obama.
