[From memory; he may have said "idealism" rather than "ideology," but the
core point would remain: that ideas do NOT have a history (as in
intellectual history") of their own. Their history is derivative from the
practice in which they are embedded, and therefore the 'same' in two
different contexts may not be the 'same idea.']
Engels defined "ideology" as the assumption that ideas have a history of
their own. That's not my preferred usage of "ideology," but the point is
clear enough however expressed.
