Yes, actually once one heads  inland from the Mediterranean or Black Seas, even a short distance, conditions can become quite cold, with readings of below  zero (Celsius that is) fairly standard for winters in such places as Romania, Bulgaria, former Yugoslavia, etc. Also, a Mediteranean" climate is not  a tropical one, as is often mistakenly assumed. A comparatively mild minus 6 degrees celsius in Berlin right now, but it was at around  minus 12 or 13 for much of the week.

I have to agree wtih Joel, New York sounds like the Mediterranean...
