actually, it used to be a sure fire way to get pagerank for clients: link 
to them at lbo. ha. google changed their pagerank algorhithm, though, 
because it was too easy to game the system. People who posted at lists with 
sig files, had an artificially high page rank because the archives were 
always pointing at their sites. You can poke around and find Matt Cutts 
talking about it a couple years ago.

The problem with LBO's archives is that they appear to get reindexed every 
year so that you get 404s using google search to find stuff, until google's 
crawler catches up. As a consequence, with the new page rank, if you serve 
out a lot of 404s and don't do 301 redirects or something, Google penalizes 
you on your pagerank considering a lot of 404s a bad user experience.
