The problem with LBO's archives is that they appear to get reindexed every year so that you get 404s using google search to find stuff, until google's crawler catches up. As a consequence, with the new page rank, if you serve out a lot of 404s and don't do 301 redirects or something, Google penalizes you on your pagerank considering a lot of 404s a bad user experience.
