You left out torture. For all the flaws of schooling, would it be better if kids just went to work?

While this question cannot be answered in the abstract (that is in abstraction from specific power relations), it is worth noting that Marx would have favored that. His position was that "education" should not exist as a separate institution or practice but should be a 'variation' within the work process.
