Roland Barthes' book on Japanese cinema, "Empire of Signs" is very beautiful. "Film as a Subversive Art" by Amos Vogel was the bible of the underground film movement. But Eisenstein is the great film writer in my humble opinion. He knew how to write about film as a practical formal aesthetic. You could still use Eisenstein as a key to opening up problems in digital image engineering.
