I got cured of that California drawl by two outrageously fast talkers at the 
Univ Iowa in night bullsessions. One was from NY and other from Philly. If I 
wanted to get in a point I had mount this every increasing slope of 
accelerated speech... Their accents were nearly unintelligible, with Philly 
worse than NY, well back in the day.
