[lbo-talk] Occupiers Debate Over Housing Dilemma

In nyc, the agenda of broader economic justice continues to be hijacked by the personal crises of the homeless occupiers. The usual response to the former statement is to call hypocrisy and to ask how Occupy Wall Street can fight economic injustice while ignoring the disparities of housing and economic privilege within its own community. Thus the immediate goal of economic justice for all takes a backseat to the indefinite struggle against homelessness, racism, homophobia, transphobia and sexism which, like the endless wars on terror, stretch indefinitely into the future and pre-empt all other politics. The more measured response is to say that a broader movement for economic justice and a struggle against racism, etc. can be fought at the same time. Yet the two seem to be mutually exclusive in the case of OWS. They have not yet been able to find an effective synthesis.
