Michael's "ancient" confused me. His account does and does not apply to
6th/5th c. Athens. And there were no "workers"; peasants and eupatridae &
merchants. (Not quite accurate). Peasant "debt" eventually led first to the
Tyranny, then to Democracy. But it was quite a struggle. I don't see _any_
relation between that history and any modern economy. See several of
Finley's books. Also Wood's book and the important books she cites.
