Sounds like he didn't think he was being asked to come up with some Benthamite hedonic aggregate -- add up all the pluses and minuses and see whether your total is greater than zero. I'd say he was making a somewhat narrower point, rather than trying to say whether or not the late unpleasantness was a Bad Thing or a Good Thing*.
