>Is it just me, or did the Mexican presidential election get less attention in the US press (left and mainstream) this year than in 2006 and 1994, and arguably 2000?

I think everyone paid it less attention this year, even in Mexico. Someone I know who spends a lot of time there remembers hearing people in Guadalajara say, with great confidence and within months of the 2006 election, that in 2012 the new president would be Peña Nieto. I think the media angle has less to do with flat-footed "propaganda" than with his being young and handsome with a famous soap opera star wife and an understanding of the importance of tv. It's politics as a variety of PR and advertising.
