I took part in a Telos reading group in Berkeley in 1980 or thereabouts. I remember the difficulty of plowing through the articles (because of the language and "theory"), but I don't remember much enlightenment.

Telos started off in 1968 as a New Left journal. For a number of years it devoted itself to promoting and popularizing the work of the Frankfurters along with other Western Marxist thinkers like Lukacs. Later on they began to take up the work of Carl Schmitt, the noted Nazi legal theorist and they began publishing the work of the French New Right theorist Alain de Benoist. So it seems that the Telos gang has managed to replicate the political trajectory followed by the New York Intellectuals after WW II, except they have done so with even more pretentious language than that of their predecessors and have hooked up with some even more toxic elements.
