Ken's basic premise is wrong wrong wrong. Marx was correct in Wages, Price,
Profit when he spoke of Austerity (not his term) as r educing workers to one
mass of wretches incapable of any higher goals. This contempt of workers for
having the wrong is politically crippling. Doug is quite correct about the
effect of Austerity. We can hope that resistance to it will grow, but if it
does for the early stages it will be for the most part workers _not_ so
badly affected by austerity. Charles Post has done a pretty exhaustive
history of who did the fighting (initially at least) in all the great
upsurges of working-class struggle, and almost _always_ it was that sector
of the working-class which too many leftists (including Marx, Engels, Lenin,
& Trotsky) have sneered at -- the so-called labor aristocracy.
