Four writing courses is a LOT because of the many hours required grading papers. Then, of course, if these teachers want to move up the food chain, they have to publish or present papers, which is a lot more (unpaid) time. It is gross.

When I was teaching, twenty years ago, three classes was average at non elite schools. For the elites, it was more like two. But then there had to be a lot more research.

I'm guessing pay is subminimal.

Not in Academia so,to understand your point, can you add two pieces of information. What does that course load translate into in terms of work (hours per week)? What is the likely pay?
