In one great book about Linux creator Linus Torvalds ("Just for fun: stories from an accidental revolutionary") by a great writer :), it describes the above at one point, saying that he wandered around the public university "for years" (I'm quoting from memory, not an exact quote) and that per that free system "everyone ends up learning something at, some point, even him", the author chuckles.
