I assume Luxemburg's "socialism or barbarism" was not a prediction but a
statement of present reality. A century could hardly be more "barbarous"
than was the 20th -- but the 21st seems bent on surpassing the 20th. We have
barbarism: the possible, though perhaps not probable, alternative is
full-scale direct democracy.
