I've read a number of things - most clearly remembered in an article on the demographics of Olympic sprinting twenty years or so ago - where a number of writers from Canada and beyond self-identified as Afro-Caribbean. Don't know if that meta-category was an element of the self-identification of the Buena Vista Social Club's Afro-Cuban All-Stars or if that name arose in the context of marketing to North Americans.
