I actually think the more interesting thing about this quote is that it reveals what I find puzzling (problematic?) about the author's view of contemporary social life: basically, that he has zero familiarity with any analysis of oppression and domination that emerged 1960s or later. IN your terms, Carrol, the author is oblivious to the analysis of time and capitalist domination in Postone's Time, Labor, and Social Domination.
