Joanna: "what distinguishes man from other species is that he commits suicide."

[WS:] I am not sure if this is true. Other species may also commit suicide, but we have no way of knowing about it. We may find, say, a beached whale, but we do know whether the creature deliberately beached itself or merely fell unwilling victim of the circumstances (disease, disorientation, environmental conditions, etc.)

I work under the assumption that all animals including humans have some form of consciousness although communicating that consciousness between species (and often within species) is extremely difficult, if at all possible. After all, all consciousness is based in material-experiential world - an interaction between the nervous system and the environment. If there is little commonality in this inter-species material-experiential sphere, there is little possibility of of inter-species communication, but that absence of communication should not be construed as the evidence of the absence of consciousness.
