Yes, please take this seriously. This is not just hype. Even if the worst case scenario is not reached this will be damaging and the worst storm in most people's lifetimes. There will be substantial flooding and widespread, long-duration power outages at the least. I tried to straddle warning of the potential and not overplaying due to uncertainty on Pen-l, but this has the potential to be catastrophic for low-lying areas. Right now the weather is indeed playing out (no longer just prognostications) for this to be a very historic and destructive, deadly storm. Storm surge may exceed 10 ft; Bloomberg was irresponsible to delay (channeling Nagin?). Sustained winds reaching and possibly exceeding 80 mph and 5-10+" of rain are also likely. Fallen leaves will block storm drains well inland and tree canopies with foliage will increase damage to them as will wet ground increase uprooting.

Prepare for a prolonged storm surge equivalent of a weak cat2 hurricane http://www2.sunysuffolk.edu/mandias/38hurricane/storm_surge_maps.html which for NYC puts it around the threshold of Zone A and Zone B evacuation zones http://www.nyc.gov/html/oem/html/hazards/storms_evaczones.shtml .
