Doug had a nice interview with the principal (Anna Allanbrook?) of Brooklyn
New School (PS 146), where his son will go for second grade. The school has
a website to visit and I went to the gallery section to see the place. Best
of show for me went to the 2an Grade project, Bridges. The kids built
bridges out of guess what? High tech cutting edge glue and ice cream sticks,
.... (My grandson is going into 2an grade in Berkeley, in some other
permutation on the `progressive' school model).
Looking at the bridges was interesting to think about the variations. Some
looked like blocky versions of the Brooklyn Bridge or Manhatten bridge,
others used other models.
Somehow, that's the kind of thing I wanted to see going on in my kid's
school back in the late 70s early 80s. And I did. So that enjoyment gets
reproduced. It's really a cool thing to see in the flesh.
(Not to overtheorize, but a bridge is a concept behind the arch as in
architecture, etc.)
