Even if there were any truth or logic in this, the qualification ('on the
spectrum') is important. The political spectrum of the US Senate runs from
mad dog reactionary (on the 'left') all the way to batshit (on the
'right'). 'Left' and 'right' really don't apply in this context; it's
tortoises all the way down. Though of course the tortoises get bigger the
farther down you go.
